back to school

After fighting the feeling that autumn was approaching I finally have to give in to it... school is back in session as of tomorrow!  Fall doesn't actually begin until September 23rd but when that bell starts ringing regularly at 8:50 a.m. Monday through Friday it sure seems like the seasons have changed.  Even though I'll be at school (a.k.a. work... I call it both and people are often confused) during the week instead of gallivanting around town I hope to keep up with the tiny hummingbird.  Be on the lookout for more sewing projects, New England fall activities (hooray for apple picking!), places to eat in RI, nursery progress, and eventually the arrival of our baby!  It's going to be sooner than I realize, I'm sure.  So wish me luck as I attempt to maintain some of my carefree summer spirit as I begin a new school year with my third and fourth grade students.  I'm looking forward to a successful start for all of us!

Today was an extra good day in third grade because we went on a field trip!  All of the first, second, and third graders (plus teachers and assistants, of course) packed into three school buses and drove to the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence.  Our students throughly enjoyed the theatreworks production of Doreen Cronin's Click Clack Moo.  I think the kids' favorite part was when one of the chickens called Farmer Brown a stink head, and I have to admit I was laughing along with them.  Another comical moment occurred during one of the many songs sung by the cows - one lyric from the chorus: "I'm proud to be Bovine/God bless the USDA."  Check out actress Collen Lis's blog here about her adventures on the road playing Farmer Brown's granddaughter Jenny.

I would highly recommend catching a theatreworks show if you're looking for a fun activity for your children, grandchildren, or students.  Peruse the schedule to see if the acting troupe is coming to a city near you.  I would love to see theatreworks perform Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, a novel by Judy Blume we read earlier this year with my fourth grade class.  Have you seen any children's plays worth checking out?
